The prisoner
Oil on canvas, cm 35x46
Conversàno, MUSeCo Polo Museale
This is a painting of romantic-fairy-tale content, published in Francesco Netti, for the first time in 1996 by Christine Farese Sperken. It belongs to a phase characterized by the desire for individuality, which, however, in this painting, still seems not fully accomplished, due to the iconographic closeness to Domenico Morelli: at a glance, it’s inevitable to think of The Christian Martyrs (1851) of the master-friend. The two works share the concave shape of the space in the upper part and the female figures, dressed in a similar way, which mirror, have the same air of resignation and sadness.
